SUMMARY:Ethnic Studies: What is the Value for our Democracy?
DESCRIPTION:ALF Silicon Valley is partnering with San José State University for this panel and dialogue to bring students\, educators\, and community leaders together to explore how ethnic studies impact education and employment\, community\, and democracy. \nThis event is part of SJSU’s Transforming Communities Conference and will have a special focus on student perspectives. \nJOIN US TO: \n\nLearn about ethnic studies to be better-informed students\, educators\, employers\, and active “citizens” of an inclusive democracy\nPractice dialogue across differences to engage productively with others and contribute to meaningful ethnic studies at SJSU and in your local schools\, colleges\, universities\, workplaces\, and communities\nIdentify actions students and community leaders can take to transform communities into more democratic and socially harmonious spaces\n\nFEATURING \n\nSan Jose State University Students\nLeon Beauchman (ALF Class XX)\, External Affairs Consultant\, AT&T; Associate Marriage and Family Therapist; President\, Santa Clara County Alliance of Black Educators; Former Board Member Santa Clara County Office of Education\nDr. Travis Boyce\, Chair\, African American Studies\, Director\, Ethnic Studies Collaborative\, SJSU\nDr. Hien Do (ALF Class XXXVI)\, Professor\, Sociology\, Interdisciplinary Social Science & Asian American Studies\, SJSU\nDr. Marcos Pizarro\, Associate Dean\, College of Education\, Professor\, Chicanx Studies\, SJSU\nToni Vanwinkle (ALF Class XXXIX)\, Senior Director\, Digital Workplace Experience\, Adobe\n\nBACKGROUND: \nEthnic studies has become a lightning rod in an environment of political polarization and racial reckoning. People in communities across the region and country have spoken out in support and opposition in school board meetings and the news media. \nWhile ethnic studies is newer in the K-12 system\, there is a long history of ethnic studies at the college level. Still\, some worry that recent state mandates could water down ethnic studies in Cal State universities. What can we learn from experiences at SJSU and in our community to support meaningful ethnic studies to strengthen education and democracy?

SUMMARY:ALF Focus Group: Deepening the work around race equity
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO ALF SENIOR FELLOWS AND FELLOWS \nWhen Joe Jaworski founded ALF some 35 years ago\, he recognized a core component of the curriculum – and a core principal of good leadership – had to be an “appreciation and understanding of diversity.” ALF Senior Fellows have continually pushed the organization over the decades to deepen the dialogue and work around racism\, equity and inclusion. In just the last four years\, we’ve overhauled our Fellows program reading\, continued to build on Class and organizational diversity at all levels\, and gone on deep journeys with now three CEO Diversity\, Inclusion\, Equity and Liberation cohorts. We are getting smarter together so that we may lead better. \nALF’s work around racial equity continues to evolve. Thanks to a generous Leadership Circle gift from Silver Lake\, ALF will be expanding our work of facilitating groups and evolving curriculum and networks to move the needle on racial equity. \nAs an inclusive organization looking to access the wisdom of the network\, We want to hear from you. \nWhile some of you have shared how ALF can help in this arena\, we want to invite additional input from the Senior Fellows network as we create an action plan for the next twelve months. We want to know how ALF might be able to assist in your learning journey and/or your work as it relates to racial justice\, inclusion\, and equity. \n***Zoom meeting link will be shared just prior to the event***

In this session we will: \n– Examine white fragility and how it shows up personally and institutionally \n– What it means to be actively anti-racist \n– Discuss how to become an ally and co-conspirator \n– Provide a space to struggle and grapple with your own internalized racism

SUMMARY:WTP Dialogue: Immigration & the imperative of narrative & culture change
DESCRIPTION:WE THE PEOPLE DIALOGUE: IMMIGRATION & THE IMPERATIVE OF NARRATIVE & CULTURE CHANGE\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO ALF SENIOR FELLOWS AND FELLOWS. \nJoin leaders from the American Immigration Council\, a national organization based in D.C.: Dan Siciliano\, Board Chair & ALF Senior Fellow (XXXI)\, Beth Werlin\, Executive Director\, and Wendy Feliz\, Director\, Center for Inclusion & Belonging\, for a dialogue about “Immigration and the Imperative for Narrative & Culture Change” in this election year and beyond. \nWe will explore the current climate on immigration and the pathway forward for our democracy. \nHow did we get to a situation where a president wins campaigning on an anti-immigration platform? \nWhere do we go from here\, particularly in a time of COVID-19? \nHow can we shift the narrative away from “us vs. them” to themes of mutual interdependence? \nThis is the second of two sessions with American Immigration Council. The first dialogue was on May 21. Both dialogues are part of ALF’s 2020 democracy initiative: We the People.
