SUMMARY:ALF Political Perspective Dialogue Circle #4
DESCRIPTION:ALF Political Perspective Dialogue Circle #4\nVitriolic hate speech and divisive politics have created schisms in our country and across the globe.  Dialogue is a superior method for resolving gridlock. Dialogue can highlight our common ground\, help us understand our differences\, and encourage us to reserve judgment until we have considered a variety of ways to approach controversial issues. Through conversation\, we can practice the art of transformative dialogue\, a key tool that brings communities together.  Core to our beliefs and curriculum\, ALF encourages dialogue and creates a network where trust and candid conversations thrive. \nIf you have any questions regarding the ALF Political Perspective Dialogue Circle\, contact our Network Weaver\, Akemi Flynn at akemi@alfsv.org \n  \nThis is the 4th session of a closed group of Senior Fellows. If you would like to join in a future group\, please complete our Political Perspectives Dialogue Circle Survey. \n\nThis is an opportunity to explore diverse political perspectives and seek understanding and common ground as an alternative to the current climate of polarization. \nThe small dialogue groups meet in 2-hour sessions\, 4-6 times over 4-8 weeks. We will start new dialogue circles as we are able to form diverse groups. \n\n

SUMMARY:News\, Technology\, and Our Democracy
DESCRIPTION:News\, Technology\, and Our Democracy\n  \nJoin us for a dialogue about news\, technology\, truth in the age of misinformation\, and the impact on our democracy. \nFeaturing: \n\nGina Dalma (XXX)\, Executive Vice President\, Strategy\, Policy & Community Action\, Silicon Valley Community Foundation\nTim Olson (XXX)\, Senior Vice President\, Strategic Digital Partners\, KQED\nMarc Berman\, CA State Assemblymember\n\nThere is growing distrust in news\, government\, and nonprofit institutions worldwide\, driven by a sense of inequity and unfairness in the system.1 The business model that has supported news production for decades is in steep decline.2 The rise of technology companies as news aggregators has dramatically shifted news consumption and perceptions\, and misinformation has become a core concern for society\, especially in this 2020 election year. How are news organizations adapting? How is reader revenue3\, constructive journalism\,4 audience-driven editorial models\,5 the trust project\, and other efforts reviving journalism in the age of misinformation? How are we finding/discerning truth amidst the misinformation? How does this impact our democracy? \n       \nThis dialogue is part of ALF’s We the People democracy initiative. \n1Edelman Trust Barometer \n2Newsonomics\, Ken Doctor \n3Journalism\, Media\, Technology Trends\, Reuters Institute\, Oxford \n4Constructive Journalism Institute \n5Hearken \n6The Trust Project \nGallop/Knight Foundation Survey: American Views 2020: Trust\, Media and Democracy

SUMMARY:WTP Dialogue: Immigration & the imperative of narrative & culture change
DESCRIPTION:WE THE PEOPLE DIALOGUE: IMMIGRATION & THE IMPERATIVE OF NARRATIVE & CULTURE CHANGE\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO ALF SENIOR FELLOWS AND FELLOWS. \nJoin leaders from the American Immigration Council\, a national organization based in D.C.: Dan Siciliano\, Board Chair & ALF Senior Fellow (XXXI)\, Beth Werlin\, Executive Director\, and Wendy Feliz\, Director\, Center for Inclusion & Belonging\, for a dialogue about “Immigration and the Imperative for Narrative & Culture Change” in this election year and beyond. \nWe will explore the current climate on immigration and the pathway forward for our democracy. \nHow did we get to a situation where a president wins campaigning on an anti-immigration platform? \nWhere do we go from here\, particularly in a time of COVID-19? \nHow can we shift the narrative away from “us vs. them” to themes of mutual interdependence? \nThis is the second of two sessions with American Immigration Council. The first dialogue was on May 21. Both dialogues are part of ALF’s 2020 democracy initiative: We the People.
