DESCRIPTION:CEO DIEL Cohort 1 Affinity Group\nOver the course of the past two years\, ALF has been facilitating two groups of 20 nonprofit leaders who want to engage more deeply on the concepts of diversity\, inclusion\, equity\, and liberation (DIEL) and to explore what those ideas mean personally\, organizationally and for the nonprofit sector. With intention\, the group spent time personally exploring white supremacy culture and the personal biases they hold. They examined how the culture of white supremacy impacts the work and structure of their organizations as well as how the sector functions as a whole. The group asked itself: “If the leaders in this sector took this on personally and organizationally\, how would we know that there had been a shift in awareness and application?” Answer: An organization has answered for itself: what are we doing that perpetuates white supremacy culture and what can we do to dismantle racism? The third cohort will of this group will begin in September of 2020. Join ALF Senior Fellows from across the country to practice deep dialogue on how we move our country forward to ensure liberty\, freedom and justice for all. \nFeatured Guests:\n \nDr. Clayborne Carson\nDr. Clayborne Carson is the founder of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University\, where he is also the Martin Luther King Jr. Centennial Professor of History. He has devoted most of his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King Jr. and the movements the iconic orator inspired. Dr. Carson’s scholarly publications have focused on African-American protest movements and political thought of the period after World War II. In 1985\, Coretta Scott King invited Dr. Carson to edit and publish the papers of her late husband. Under Carson’s direction\, the King Papers Project has produced seven volumes of The Papers of Martin Luther King Jr. He has served as a consultant on several documentary films and has appeared on many national TV and radio programs. \n  \nReverend Cheryl Moore Adamson\, M.Div. \nReverend Cheryl Moore Adamson was born in Hartsville\, South Carolina on May 23\, 1952 and grew up in Conway\, where she graduated from high school in 1970. She attended the University of South Carolina\, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1974 and the University of Maryland at College Park where she earned a Masters’ Degree in Health Education in 1982. \nReverend Adamson is the Executive Director of the Palmetto Works Community Development Corporation\, the umbrella organization for Palmetto Kids! Music and Arts Academy\, the Palmetto Youth Leadership Academy\, and CHOPS Produce\, a fruit & vegetable store serving a low-income community in a USDA certified food desert. She has served on the National Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship\, on the board of the Waccamaw Community Foundation\, and is a member of Class II of the Waccamaw American Leadership Forum. She has served as the Chairperson of the Board of the Baptist House of Studies at Duke Divinity School and as the convener of the Annual Women’s Beachwalk Retreat. \n  \n \nChris Norwood (Moderator)\, Class XXVIII\nChris Norwood is a Stanford University Technologist \, Founder of Bay Area Tutoring Association\, Milpitas Unified School Board of Trustees Vice President\, member of San Jose State College of Education Advisory Committee and American Leadership Forum (ALF) Silicon Valley Senior Fellow. Chris has been a social justice advocate\, civil rights community leader and education champion for digital literacy and computer science equity in the San Francisco Bay Area. How are news organizations adapting? How is reader revenue3\, constructive journalism\,4 audience-driven editorial models\,5 the trust project\, and other efforts reviving journalism in the age of misinformation? How are we finding/discerning truth amidst the misinformation? DESCRIPTION:CEO DIEL Cohort 3 Affinity Group\n  \nOver the course of the past two years\, ALF has been facilitating two groups of 20 nonprofit leaders who want to engage more deeply on the concepts of diversity\, inclusion\, equity and liberation (DIEL) and to explore what those ideas mean personally\, organizationally and for the nonprofit sector. With intention\, the group spent time personally exploring white supremacy culture and the personal biases they hold. They examined how the culture of white supremacy impacts the work and structure of their organizations as well as how the sector functions as a whole. The group asked itself: “If the leaders in this sector took this on personally and organizationally\, how would we know that there had been a shift in awareness and application?” Answer: An organization has answered for itself: what are we doing that perpetuates white supremacy culture and what can we do to dismantle racism? DESCRIPTION:Youth In Crisis: What Can We Do?\nThe pandemic and calls for social justice are causing great distress for many of our youth. Along with confronting the usual challenges of childhood and adolescence\, they’re experiencing uncertainty regarding their education and isolation from their friends and community. The widespread and highly publicized protests for racial justice have compelled many of them to get involved. As recently reported on the front page of San Jose Mercury News (July 7\, 2020)\, our youth are increasingly experiencing higher levels of “anxiety and depression”. \nThe crisis may have a devastating impact on youth feeling alone and voiceless. What will be the effects on youth who have traditionally been most at risk? Can we re-imagine and redirect community resources in a way that will be more responsive to this crisis?
