SUMMARY:AAPI Caucus
DESCRIPTION:Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Senior Fellows and Fellows come together to build relationships\, support each other’s leadership\, and explore how they can collectively address issues of concern to them and their communities. \nRacial caucuses can provide “opportunities for those who share a common identity to meet separately to gather\, connect\, and learn.” Often\, “caucusing can be a valuable component of an organization’s broader racial justice and equity and inclusion efforts\,” including time in separate caucuses and time together in multi-racial community. \nALF is continuing and deepening the work of bringing people together to build understanding and relationships across differences. \nIf you are interested in joining the AAPI\, Black\, Latino/a/x\, or white anti-racist group\, or creating another group\, please contact Akemi Flynn.

SUMMARY:What and Why You Should Know about Ethnic Studies
DESCRIPTION:***REGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO ALF SENIOR FELLOWS AND FELLOWS.*** \nJoin ALF Sr. Fellows and Fellows and experts in the field to: \n\nLearn about ethnic studies and critical race theory – the benefits and critiques – to be better informed and active “citizens” of an inclusive democracy\nPractice dialogue across differences to be able to engage productively with others beyond ALF and contribute to meaningful ethnic studies in your local schools and communities\n\nFeatured speakers:\nRick Banks (Class XXXIX) Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor of Law\, Faculty Director of Stanford Center for Racial Justice \, Stanford University\nDr. Mary Ann Dewan (Class XXXIX)\, Superintendent\, Santa Clara County Office of Education\nCamille Llanes-Fontanilla (Class XXXVIII) Executive Director\, Somos Mayfair\nDr. Marcos Pizarro\, Associate Dean\, College of Education\, Professor\, Chicanx Studies\, San Jose State University \nBackground: In March 2021\, the CA Department of Education adopted an Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum for high schools for voluntary adoption by school districts. People in communities across the region and country have spoken out in support and opposition in school board meetings and the news media. Ethnic studies has become a lightning rod in an environment of political polarization and racial reckoning. Arizona banned ethnic studies and\, more recently\, other states are banning the teaching of critical race theory. \nWhile there is a long history of ethnic studies at the college level\, the current debate raises questions about K-12 education: \n\nWhy have students not been taught more complete history before? What do California students learn now?\nWhat are the impacts of learning about structural or systemic racism on young students?\nHow will teachers be trained and equipped to teach these issues?\nHow does ethnic studies education impact our broader communities and democracy?

SUMMARY:CEO DIEL Cohort 3 Affinity Group
DESCRIPTION:CEO DIEL Cohort 3 Affinity Group\n  \nOver the course of the past two years\, ALF has been facilitating two groups of 20 nonprofit leaders who want to engage more deeply on the concepts of diversity\, inclusion\, equity\, and liberation (DIEL) and to explore what those ideas mean personally\, organizationally and for the nonprofit sector. With intention\, the group spent time personally exploring white supremacy culture and the personal biases they hold. They examined how the culture of white supremacy impacts the work and structure of their organizations as well as how the sector functions as a whole. The group asked itself: “If the leaders in this sector took this on personally and organizationally\, how would we know that there had been a shift in awareness and application?” Answer: An organization has answered for itself: what are we doing that perpetuates white supremacy culture and what can we do to dismantle racism? The third cohort will of this group will begin in September of 2020. All three of these groups are closed groups. \nIf you have any questions regarding the CEO DIEL Affinity Group\, contact Chief Impact Officer\, Jenny Niklaus at jniklaus@alfsv.org
