Earlier this month, the Fellows from Class XLV gathered in Half Moon Bay for their two-day “Forecasting the Future” retreat, marking the halfway point in their year-long curriculum.
On the first day of the retreat, the focus was on discussing the impact each Fellow hopes to achieve during their leadership journey. This session involved broad conversations about current political issues, revealing a diversity of perspectives. Some Fellows shared their hopes for the future of the country and their communities.
This generative dialogue represented a practice of community for the Fellows, emphasizing care within the group. It provided an opportunity to listen and remain open to different viewpoints. This was a clear manifestation of diversity, inclusion, and belonging, as the group agreed on the vital connection between their discussions that day and the core tenets of American Leadership Forum:
- We believe in the power and importance of trusted relationships.
- We believe that diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging are critical for building thriving, equitable communities, healthy individuals, and a healthy planet.
- We believe in the power of dialogue and collaborative leadership with individuals who have curiosity about those whose identity, culture, background, and life experiences may differ from their own.
- We believe we have a responsibility to prioritize active civic engagement to serve all people in our communities equitably.
- We prioritize and engage in practices of mindfulness, grace, acceptance, accountability, and openness to personal and professional growth.
On the second day of the retreat, guest facilitator Eveline Shen conducted a timely workshop on courageous leadership. Her new book, Choosing to Lead Against the Current, provided perfect guidance for leaders facing challenges in turbulent times.
Stay tuned for the next update on Class XLV as they conclude their final session for 2025 in mid-November and prepare to jump back into their “second half” in early January.
